Description: This is a brief report on the trip that the author made with two other SOA members, Bruce Schobel and Jim Wiseman, to Almaty, Kazakhstan during the week of September 1, 2003. They were invited by the Actuarial Society of Kazakhstan [ASK] to conduct several seminars for their members and various government officials. The trip was financed by USAID through a grant to the Arizona-Kazakhstan Foundation. The topics of the seminars were pension/social security reform, role of the actuary in an economy, annuity pricing/ reserving and professionalism.

Description: The technological, globalized world we live in was barely imaginable when the organization now called the International Association of Actuaries [IAA] was launched 103 years ago. However, that world was a reality when the International Forum of Actuarial Associations [IFAA] was formed as a section of the IAA in 1995. As the quadrennial IAA congress convenes in June 1998 in Birmingham, England, IAA members will vote on a historic measure. They will consider transforming the IAA, now an association of individual actuaries, into the structure of the IFAA, an association of actuarial organizations, to maintain and work to increase the profession’s influence in an increasingly globalized world. This article describes the details of the proposed changes.
